Multiple WAN IP
The emergence of Wide Area Networks (WANs) in a growing technological world has impacted and fueled businesses in a massive way. Technology, especially the Internet, once looked upon as complex and for the elite, has now altered the way we conduct business and the way we live. Business continuity plays a vital role in all businesses, and in order to capacitate that, companies have a need for a robust WAN. Large enterprises use multiple wide area network connections in order to have continuous uptime regardless of technical outages. An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a unique identification number that helps to identify a device on a TCP/IP network. The IP address is assigned to the devices on a computer network, which uses the Internet Protocol addresses for communication purposes among its nodes. A WAN IP address is used for identifying a device such as the user computer system on the Internet. In business applications, possessing prior knowledge about the WAN IP addresses or multiple WAN IP addresses is very useful and necessary, as well. Knowing WAN IPs enables users to access their systems from any location. End users can connect to the services available on a remote system if the WAN IP address is available. Large enterprises or corporates generally use multi wide area network links for uninterrupted connectivity, and hence would need this IP addresses to remotely access systems. In the IP addressing concept, there are two important types “Static IP address and Dynamic IP address. In the static IP addressing, the network administrator manually assigns the IP address to the computer. The dynamic IP address is where the computer’s IP address is automatically assigned. Static addressing is useful in cases where the Domain Name Service (DNS) directory host has to be identified in order to translate domain names to IP addresses. Dynamic IP addresses are mostly designated by Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) servers on Local Area Networks (LANs) and broadband networks. They are extensively used owing to the ease of automatic assignment of IP addresses as opposed to the cumbersome task of manual allocation to every device on the network. Dynamic addressing facilitates multiple devices to share the defined address space on a network. The current version of an Internet Protocol address consists of 4 groups of numbers (octets), which are separated by decimal points. The groups of numbers are in the range of 0 to 255. An IP address by itself is a large number and multi WAN addresses are quite difficult to remember. To resolve this issue, IP addresses can be assigned to a host name, provided they are relatively constant. The Internet Service Providers (ISPs) also assign dynamic IP addresses to the users to further simplify the process. Multiple WAN addresses are handled effectively using this method, alleviating the process of having to remember or store all the numerical designators. The paradigm shift seen in businesses due to WAN networks is one of the phenomenal changes caused by advancement in technology. Beginning with a single Internet connection used by the privileged, there has now come a point — over the last ten years –wherein the utilization of Internet has become a global phenomenon. Enterprises invariably employ these wide area network connections to have continuous services. Multiple WAN interfaces also play a crucial part as they provide the platform where devices can connect to the Wide Area Network. These interfaces are usable for data transmission and also Voice over IP (VoIP) services, using wired and/or wireless networks. A single wide area network interface or multiple WAN interfaces will use any of these networks to establish connection between the devices and a WAN. Multi WAN interfaces are compatible with all the common network protocols. The use of multiple WAN IP addresses considerably improves communications since remote access of the network is possible. Users get the benefits of multi WAN IPs, including remote access, saving time, and increased bandwidth.
